STI Testing and Treatment

STI Testing and Treatment

STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) and STIs (sexually transmitted infections) are more common than you may think. Some are dangerous and can lead to infertility and other problems that can last a lifetime without treatment.

Some STDs and STIs have no symptoms but can cause permanent damage internally. If you are sexually active, you could be at risk. If you think you may have an STD or STI, visit CHOICES to get tested.

We test for chlamydia & gonorrhea with a urine sample. Test results take approximately 48 hours, so you will need to return on a separate day to discuss the results and receive treatment if needed. Since it can take a while for STIs to show up on testing, it is best to wait about 21 days (3 weeks) from the date of sexual contact to be tested.

Regardless of sexual identity, gender expression or orientation, people should know the physical and biological risks to their sexual choices. What makes our STI Program different from most STI testing sites is personal education, awareness, and discussion, in addition to testing.

Why Do I Need to Get Tested for STIs Before an Abortion?

It’s crucial to get tested and treated for STIs before an abortion. If you have an STI at the time of an abortion, the procedure could cause the infection to spread to the reproductive tract, potentially leading to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)[1]. When left untreated, PID can cause infertility and ectopic pregnancy[1] in the future.
